Going into high school wasn’t that big of a deal. It was just like going into elementary and junior high. The same procedures went down, no matter what grade you were going into. Filled out your name, address, who you lived with, your medical information and all that. Nothing was different, except that this year, his freshman year at high school, would be the year Iliajah started his new identity.
It had started as any normal day, waking up late as the summer came to an end. Iliajah rolled over in his covers hiding from the blinding sun that broke in through the thin curtains and rolled up the walls of his room. Another late night was getting back at him, but he was determined to get the upper hand for another few moments of sleep. Just as he was drifting off into another nonsense dream, his older sister Lily knocked and burst into the room tossing a plastic covered jacket, shirt, and pair of pants onto of him. “Come on Iliajah, your uniform came today!” She shook him, pulling the covers off as he groan and protested, jerking back. “Oh I can’t believe my younger brother is finally going to be in high school with me!, come on wake up!!!” She jerked back another forceful tug, pulling him and the blankets off the bed. It took a little while longer, but she finally managed to get him down stairs and at the dining room table along with his younger brother Jacque, his father and his mother. His father was reading the newspaper while his mother cooked and scolded Jacque for bringing his soccer ball to the table.
“I don’t see what the big deal is, its just high school, Lily is already going to be a junior and you guys didn’t make that big a deal about it.” Jacque complained cramming down his pancake into his mouth. Lily shushed him, as she was taught, reminding him of his manners, of which the eleven year old should already be aware of. Eliajah just groaned, picking at his food; it wasn’t that big to him either but he knew why it was to his parents. His father eyed him over the top of the paper. It was true that they didn’t make this big a deal when Lily went into high school, because she wasn’t supposed to grow up and be her father. Ilijah was a spitting image of his father, down to the short and nicely shaded blonde hair. Jacque had black hair, like his mother and even though Lily had the same features as her father, it was still Iliajah’s job to live up to his father’s name.
The table went silent, except for the noises of fork hitting plate, and glass touching the wooden table. Iliajah could feel his father’s stare, still raining down upon him, causing him to sink in his chair. “manma, can I be excused?” He asked quickly, looking up at her with desperate eyes. She would have allowed him to leave, but his father broke in. “Why?,...you’ve barley touched your food. Don’t disrespect your mother, now eat.” He pulled the paper back up, to cover his face as he read and ate. Iliajah quickly rolled his eyes, hiding that fact as his mother joined them at the table. The table went silent again and his mother turned to him as a quick conversation to relieve them of the silence.
“So, you were up late last night again, what are you doing on that computer all night?” She picked at him, putting jam on her toast. “Nothing really, just talking to friends.” He mumbled, ready to put the spot on someone else. “Probably talking to that boy again...” His father grumbled, stirring his coffee. “You know his friends do have names...” She replied, trying to keep Iliajah from getting too upset with his father’s inconsiderate remarks. “Friends? hah, I’m talking about that one lad, the one who isn’t...ehh, right” He kept his eyes on the paper, sipping at the coffee. His mother had to break in before Iliajah got himself into trouble. “Now, I know you don’t mean that...his friends are...”
“No, I mean it I assure you, he’s not right and his parents aren’t too smart letting him be that way, a young man his age should be chasing after girls, not our son,..” He indicated to Iliajah with his coffee cup, and went on with his statement. “...and you’d do a good mind to stay away from him, you hear me Iliajah.” He took another sip of his coffee, letting it cool down. Iliajah looked as though he were going to burst, but instead he just sat back in his chair, taking his napkin off his lap and putting on his plate. “Actually,...manma, last night I was making plans for today, I’m going on a date...with him tonight.” He couldn’t help but grin hearing his father choking on his latest sip of coffee.
They ended up arguing the rest of that day, every time they saw each other. Iliajah ended up having to sneak out to go on his date, and when he got back, his father grounded him for the next two weeks. This continued all summer, and it got so bad that they ended up moving in his father’s desperation to keep him from dating that guy any more.
Well, the new school year started just as they were done moving in to their new house. Iliajah sat there, in his seat, a grim look on his face as the teacher passed out information sheets. He began filling out the form, last name, middle, first...when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He was just finishing his middle name when he looked back at a boy with Black hair. “Hey, I didn’t see you over the summer, you new here?”
“Yeah....” He murmured, giving him a small smile. “Cool, my name’s Eric, it’s nice to meet you.....Paul?” He held his hand out as he read from Iliajah’s paper. “hmm, can I call you Paulie?, we should hand out sometime...” Iliajah took his hand shaking it, and taking the name in for a second. “y..yeah.....yeah, you can call me Paulie.” His smile turned into a grin immediately. “it’s nice to meet you too, and that sounds good.” He turned back around, looking down at his paper. He erased his middle name and wrote Iliajah in it’s place. Then he wrote Paulie in place of his first name.
I figured I needed to show you guys my crappy writings. ^ ^, Be nice you know drawing is my strength. But I felt that I needed to show Paulie's conflict with his Dad.
